The North of Boston
Convention and Visitors Bureau, Inc. (NBCVB) is a private, nonprofit,
membership based organization responsible for promotion of the North Shore
and Merrimack Valley as a travel destination.
Established by
legislation as one of the state's thirteen regional tourism councils,
NBCVB is the official liaison between the North of Boston region and the
Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.
The NBCVB has been
in existence since 1955 and has changed its name and location during the
course of this time. The Bureau has been located in Salem, Danvers,
Beverly and is now in Peabody.
The North of Boston
CVB is managed by a professional staff with the Executive Director responsible for the day-to-day operations of the agency. The overall
mission of the North of Boston CVB is to develop and implement effective
marketing strategies to increase the number of overnight visitors to
Massachusetts.
The Executive
Director reports to a Board of Directors and its Executive Board
(Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, and three at large
members). This group of elected representatives along with the Executive
Director set the long-range objectives of the organization. The Executive
Board meets on a monthly basis, the full board every other month.
The Bureau is
presently comprised of a membership of 225 businesses located throughout Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk counties. With aggressive recruitment
efforts, that number is expected to grow to over 250 within the next year.
The Bureau works
cooperatively with other regional promotional agencies, including the
Essex National Heritage Commission, Offices of Tourism, Chambers of
Commerce throughout North of Boston. Many of the Chamber Directors serve
on the Board of Directors for NBCVB.
Members are
encouraged to be actively involved in its association. A number of
committees have been established to address the diverse needs of the
membership. Existing committees include: Meetings and Conventions
Advisory, VIP Pass, Fam Tour, Brochure/Marketing, Special Events,
Packaging, Grant Review, Nominating, Visitor Center Advisory and
Membership. New committees are formed to meet specific goals of the
organization. There is a monthly Membership Luncheon held on the last
Wednesday of the month at one of the member properties. Additional
programs/workshops/networking events are held throughout the year on an as
needed basis.
The annual Meeting
of the NBCVB is held each spring, typically during the month of March. At
this meeting, the new slate of officers is elected and the Bureau honors
outstanding members or their contribution to the tourism industry.
